The seminar will host an open and shared reflection on art education, taking as a point of departure the notion of fictional institutions.
What are fictional institutions and where do we encounter them in the reality? In the current debate on art institutions, fiction has appeared as an artistic tool of critique. Rather than intending fiction as ‘non-existing’ or ‘imaginary’, we focus on the ‘fictional’ as that which is ‘constructed’ and thus always constructible otherwise.
The seminar comprises two parts, in which we use fiction as a tool to engage with the deconstruction and the construction of the art school as an institution.
In the first part, we will gather different theoretical inputs that will help us reflect on art schools, collecting historical examples and critical questions, focusing on their relationship with the context outside and on their internal functioning.
In the second part, we will delve into the practice of using fiction as a tool for construction and experiment directly with the roles, rules and elements that constitute an art school today, putting them at work in our context across reality and fiction.
The course can be held in English and German or both.
