Boats: Spaces of Imagination

„The ship is the heterotopia par excellence. In civilizations without boats, dreams dry up,
espionage takes the place of adventure, and the police take the place of pirates.“ (Michel Foucault)

The one-day workshop is based on a performance seven which took place months ago and depicted boat project from Frankfurt to the Black Sea from April-October 2014, and inspired by Michel Foucaults idea of boats being the „the greatest reserve of the imagination“. The workshop deals
with the question of how functional and non-functional boats can be used for artistic, social and/or
scientific research purposes in Belgrade. First, we take a close look at different boat metaphors and discuss the more abstract question of what boats can represent and stand for. Furthermore, we will then leave the gallery space to walk along the Sava River to get inspiration by the many ship wrecks lying around; to work on ideas and try to transform those into a concrete visual outcome.
Artists all ages with all kind of interdisciplinary background are welcome - video/photo/audio
artists, painters, sculputres, musicians, performance artists etc. We will be discussing, developing
ideas and presenting them for the public. In the evening, at the end of the workshop, there will be a small presentation on the developed ideas and envisioned works in the gallery.
The workshop is an attempt to start a long-term exchange of ideas and practical work which is
plenned to take its shape in August/September 2014, and continue throughout 2015 in Belgrade.
The aim of this workshop is to develop group visions for possible transformations of boats in
relation to context of the City of Belgrade. Furthermore, we aim to provide a platofrm for thinking
of ways where boat wrecks can be intergrated and joined together to create a space that is
confronted with creative potential and utopian ideas surpassing mere entertainment.
