Stage for the 21st Century
How porous and fleshy can the theater be? Working with an expanded understanding of the theater, this workshop will explore what a relevant stage for the 21st century could be. Using a feminist praxis and with an eye towards Jane Rendell’s articulation of a critical spatial practice, we will think and move through concepts of collectivity, interiority, alterity, performativity and materiality. What forms of performative architectures does this vocabulary enable and generate? Through a process of reading theory, talking, dancing and choreographic practices we hope to, at the end of our three weeks together, create a performative space that is inclusive, sensuous, responsive and challenging—one that performs as we wish it would; or perhaps performs what we didn’t know we or it wanted.
