Excursion to PAF (Performing Arts Forum): Spring Meeting & Seminar. "The (Re)Use and Abuse of Academic Texts"

CuP 07/08/09

Limited number of participants! Please register for the excursion by sending an email to Rose Beermann (rose.beermann@theater.uni-giessen.de) latest until 10th of January 2019.
This excursion to the Performing Arts Center (PAF) in St. Erme in France combines a research seminar on the topic of the (re)use and abuse of scientific texts with the Spring Meeting that annually takes place at PAF. As a gathering of artists and theorists from various geographical contexts, the Spring Meeting offers an occasion to exchange practices and to discuss theoretical issues related to the artistic and scientific research of the participants. In 2017, 120 researchers, philosophers and artists assembled at PAF in order to share and to discuss methodologies, works and thoughts within the frame of the Spring Meeting (amongst others: Mette Edvardsen, Jan Ritsema, Hanna Hurtzig, Boris Groys, Tristan Garcia, Sergej and Nikolina Pristas).
PAF is an informal institution that was initiated and is run by artists, theoreticians and practitioners. Located in an old coventry, PAF is a work space that offers a variety of studios and stages as well as a library and media library for research purposes and the development of artistic and scientific projects. Furthermore, PAF is a place in which one is constantly encountering other professional and not-yet professional practitioners and activists in the field of performing arts, visual art, literature, music, new media and internet, theory and cultural production as well as scientists who seek to research and determine their own conditions of work. PAF is neither a production house nor a research-center, it is a forum for producing knowledge in critical exchange and ongoing discursive practice, a place for experimentation with other than known modes of production and organization of work, e.g. open source production. As such, it is a platform for everyone who wants to expand possibilities and interests in her/his own working practice.
In PAF, Rose Beermann and Martina Ruhsam will offer a research seminar that investigates the (re)use and abuse of scientific texts for artistic purposes. While in scientific work a precise interpretation of the meaning of the words of an author is crucial, there are no limits to an artistic utilization of scientific texts: It can be cut up, fragmented or transformed, it can be embodied in various ways, it might be translated into actions or a score. The text can become science fiction or a noise concert, may figure as a starting point for a choreographic study or be the basis for a story to be told. In this (artistic) research seminar we will experiment with various artistic approaches of how to deal with and appropriate scientific texts. Furthermore, we will investigate which artistic strategies and tactics can be discerned in scientific texts.

The excursion will be approximately 10 days at the end of March/beginning of April 2019, exact dates will be announced.
