The Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Freiburg invites applications for a

Junior Professorship (W1) with Tenure Track for Geomorphology and recent Morphodynamics

in the Department of Environmental Social Sciences and Geography to be filled by April 1st, 2019.

This professorship is also particularly suitable for highly qualified early career researchers.

The applicant should have a research focus on the field-based collection and model-based analysis of recent and subrecent morphodynamic processes of the earth´s surface, ideally with an expertise in the area of sediment balances and sediment cascades, recent slope and/ or fluvial dynamics. If possible, these approaches should be integrated in societal related concepts, e.g. risk assessment or risk management. The regional examples at the Rhine and its tributaries could serve as a reality laboratory. The use of modern sensor- and computer-based methods is expected. In the area of teaching, basic courses in physical geography are to be offered (e.g. lectures, seminars or modules, field exercises, study trips or laboratories), specifically in geomorphology, as well as soil geography and biogeography, always including the corresponding field methods. Another regional focus, possibly outside Europe, is required, with a broad coverage in terms of content as well as methodology. Further tasks include coordinating activities in research and teaching, collaboration in the academic self-administration as well as in other study programmes and in the faculty´s postgraduate school.

We are looking for a personality who is highly recognized in the areas mentioned and who is skilled in interdisciplinary collaborations, successful project management and persuasive teaching. She/ He is expected to build up an active workgroup which is well integrated in national and international networks. The willingness to actively attract external funding from public and private sources, as well as to engage in interfaculty activities is required.

Prerequisites for the employment of Junior Professors are a university degree, an outstanding dissertation and an excellent publication record.

This position is a fixed term of four years. After a successful interim evaluation, it can be extended by two years. After successful end evaluation, the tenure procedure towards Full Professorship W3 will be initiated.

The tenure procedures are regulated in the Statutes and Quality assurance concept for Junior Professorships with and without Tenure Track and agreed upon with the Ministry of Science. As a prerequisite for granting tenure and the subsequent conversion into a full professorship (W3) (1) the requirements defined in the Statutes and Quality assurance concept have to be met and (2) the subject specific criteria determined by the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources have to be met.
